#HeadlineNews ‘Heartbreak’ as well-known glass company to close

Thanks to Marcus Boothe and BBC News Online for the Headline

The “Bristol Blue Glass ” Company has tragically decided that it will close.

Blue Glass as a product has a long history originating from Bristol and pioneered since the 1780’s by artisans , characterised by it’s intense blue colour it’s heyday was with aristocrats in the 18th century and the glass itself is created by adding cobalt oxide to lead crystal. It’s certainly a craft that we do not want to die. There has been a petition signed by 7000 people to try and keep the business going.

However, as the public statement by the business has said that they need to be able to run a manufacturing business and not support an expensive hobby which has no chance of giving those who operate and work in it a sustainable livelihood.

So there we go another layer of quality and expertise in craftsmanship is eroded. I note that the owners of Bristol Glass blame the current crisis in the Middle East and manufacturing expenses, but a bit like weaving and lacemaking, why lose the skills? We don’t want to see them in a museum.Make it a life business for people who want to learn and who want to know how to make something of quality.

We have lost so many skills, and yet we want people to live fulfilled lives and not be enslaved in monthly expenses that without good employment many cannot afford.

The politicians are media people who do not know how to “make” anything except “hot air”. They say they work hard , but they are lazy people who alienate others and who want “easy” money. This needs to stop. We want Blue Glass!
