Have you ever liked a villain more than the hero? Who and why?
I’m just at the beginning (9% as I’m reading it on an ancient kindle) of Victor Hugo’s Les Miseràbles and Jean Valjean is struggling with his conscience.
He is rejected everywhere because of his yellow passport(19 years a convict because he attempted to steal a loaf of bread).Even going to one house and the wife whispering to her husband “stray cat”,as a result he is left with no food or shelter for the night.
The bishop comes to his rescue with his open door policy and offers him food and a comfortable bed for the night.Valjean in return steals his best silver.
The bishop rescues Valjean again by saying he”gifted” the silver to him when Valjean is caught by the Police.
The only payment the Bishop wants is that he becomes a good man.
Valjean is still not convinced and it takes the loss of little gervais and his 40 sous for Valjean to reassess his “evil” outlook.
Valjean does a lot of soul searching and I’m not sure where it will all end as I’ve still got 91% of the book to read,but Jean Valjean is already a hero in my eyes.
