Stoats are not welcome in Orkney and as such this one who had swam some distance by itself to reach Rousay has been hunted down and removed from the Island.
The hunt itself was a concerted effort over seven months involving targeted trapping, dog searches , AI-assisted trail cameras and other monitoring tools and support from trained volunteers.
The poor little blighter didn’t stand a chance and was despatched with a humane spring trap.
They are not a native species and will eat the rare Orkney vole and rare sea birds. For the moment Orkney is again free of stoats until the next one decides the grass is greener across the water.
