The ‘S’ sticker is not mandatory and their introduction many years ago was to aid drivers in France who reach a certain age and still want to drive,but want to highlight that they are an older driver.
The ‘S’ stands for senior and underneath in smaller writing it might say”Votre ainé au volant”(Senior Citizen at the Wheel).
Those who disagree with the sticker feel it stigmatises ‘older drivers’,however there are no plans to make it the Law to use them.
France does not have a mandatory medical test (which the EU wanted to introduce but was rejected by the majority of MEP’s)
In the UK for a car driver over 70 ,their licence has to be renewed every three years and their fitness to drive made by self-declaration.Other classes of vehicles have stricter rules.
So the ‘S’ sticker is a matter of personal choice and insurance company accident statistics show that drivers under 35 are the cause of more fatal accidents on French Roads.
