The sad ending of “The Toilers of The Sea”

If you could change the ending of any book, which one would it be?

Victor Hugo was right with the ending of “The Toilers of the Sea”.He probably was referring to something much deeper than I will ever know and in truth I would not change it.

However, being a happy ending kind of gal I would have liked Gilliatt to have been rescued by three schoolgirls, one of whom was an extremely strong swimmer .

They  spot him unconscious floating  in the water and  man handle him to shore. Interestingly enough, girl handle would not sound quite right ,but I suppose the girls show the strength of men and this seems appropriate

The families of the girls nurse Gilliatt back to health and he becomes part of their close knit community.Eventually marrying the girl whose skill and strength as a swimmer saved him,and they raise children and are well respected on the Island.

Déruchette’s fate would not be so healthy as she would die in childbirth as so many women did in those days and her husband would marry again quite quickly, as he wanted to be a missionary and would need a wife to help him.

Victor Hugo deep in thought

Namaste and Thank You for Reading.🙏
