Love and Reading

Which book have you read more than any other?

Look I shouldn’t be recommending books to

anyone,

My reading is sporadic and slow otherwise I

would get nothing done

I like to find out about things and love a good

story,

Don’t really like books that make me worry

The modern stuff I find quite a bore

Many of their ideas make me snore

I discovered HG Wells late in life

Pleasantly surprised probably like his wife,

Mark Twain knew how to write,

Not all his ideas were to the right,

Herman Melville shone a light on nature ,

Moby Dick was such an adventure

I do revisit books and will do so more

Not blood or guts or a great big saw

Stokers Dracula had style and subtlety

Imagine going to London to show off your

dentistry,

And Daphne de Maurier was not away with the

Birds

Hitchcock realised  she wrote wonderful words

There are so many classics yet to name

I’m sure you really feel the same,

One last word before I go

And that is my favourite  is Victor Hugo.

He was a titan of writing and socially aware,

His footsteps went where others wouldn’t dare.

Namaste and Thank You for Reading🙏

The AI Heatwave

It’s the UK here, we are having a heatwave. We are not used to these temperatures and we are suffering. I just thought I’d share AI’s picture of our heatwave. It does feel dry and as if the sun is beating down on us endlessly. Namaste , thank you for reading, stay cool and may […]

Deep Breathing

What’s one habit that has improved your life the most?

I cling on to the hope,

That one day my life won’t be a trope,

An Internet Influence or a Google Ad,

To tell everyone that their life is bad,

I’d just like to share in a quiet way,

That I do deep breathing every day .

Namaste and Thank You for Reading 🙏

Harder than others?

A hawk with glowing electrical patterns on its wings flying over a mountain valley at sunset.
A majestic hawk soars through a sunset valley, its wings crackling with mystical, glowing energy.

What’s a chapter of your life you’d title “The Hard Years” — and what got you through it?

Some have it harder than others and that’s a fact

Some whinge and whine and it’s all an act

There’s never enough of anything,

They’re afraid when they hear the doorbell ring,

Was that me I really don’t know?

It all seems like such a very long time ago.

A sequel?

What’s a book you think deserves a sequel?

A sequel or a prequel? The original is the key.Does the story merit further investigation. Is there more to tell?

Success means people want to read more, but it all depends, I’ve got to admit I like short stories and one off novels and the fact that I can trust the writer to tell me a good tale.

If the writer believes it requires a sequel(or prequel) then I’m in.

I’ve been Camping Again

July is my Birthday month,so to celebrate I decided way back in February 2024  to book a night at YHA Wye Valley to stay in one of their six Bell Tents beside the beautiful River Wye. One of the key considerations was that the hostel is dog friendly, which it is. It cost £63.00 for the […]

Things not to do on a campsite

Do not carry a toilet roll in your hand across the campsite walking towards the toilets. There is toilet roll in the dispensers so it shouldn’t be necessary to bring your own if you wish to bring your own carry it in a bag or wrapped in a towel to disguise it.

Also do not announce loudly to your husband  that your own toilet roll is softer and gives a better wipe

When he queries why you are carrying a toilet roll. The fact you bought it in Tesco and it’s perforated is really too much information. 😂😂😂🙄

A Day in Penzance

Penzance School of Art is a building worth going to see. It’s up a hill that is Morrab Road and is in a residential area leading down to the West Promenade.

Penzance School of Art

Oscar Wilde was shown around here when he visited Penzance on his lecture tour.He was accompanied  by the Mayor who had invited him to see the recently opened art school.

There is an open air theatre nearby with a production of The Importance of Being Earnest being performed in July.

I was trying to see if any original features existed that might have been there when Oscar visited.Perhaps maybe the lampposts outside, which fittingly were slightly lopsided and almost foppish and quizzical, much like I think he was about humanity.

The sun shone brightly and it was lovely to see the building.

A Poet in Every Port

I laughed when I saw this set up which was outside the Jubilee Pool and thought what Oscar would have said? Perhaps he would have gone over for a chat and questioned if  it  was really poetry at all.

Thank you No 9 for providing a dog bowl of water on a hot day.

We got to the Queen’s Hotel and I was not disappointed . Oscar stayed here  on his visit It was classic.Still owned by the same family who owned it when Oscar visited.Though Daphne de Maurier is a more well regarded guest.I wonder if Oscar paid his bill.

My objective was to have a cream tea there and although hotels are not my natural forte.I waltzed in and established that we could order a cream tea and sit in the bar with my dog.

The staff were very friendly and as I looked around I again tried to see features that may have been in situ when Oscar visited.

I think the interior is charming and has an oldly worldly feel to it. I loved the Guinness Harp on the bar. There was a wake on in the lounge and two ladies came to the small bar looking for a drink. There was no staff around and it made me laugh when the lady turned around and abruptly said

“Is there anyone serving here?”

There I was sitting in my shorts and tee-shirt,I was hardly  the staff. I just put my hands in the air

.

Perhaps Oscar couldn’t have visited the Ladies Cloakroom, but he would have appreciated the amount of coat hooks available to hang up their shawls and coats when visiting.

There is a reading room in the hotel too and musical soirees , Andre Dieci did a Concert there recently.

I had a funny experience with the reading room.

I checked with a member of staff could I go in and have a look thinking perhaps Oscar would have read a book  in there.

“No problem”

I opened the door and there was a lady sitting with her hands held upward like Jesus Christ surrounded by a load of other people sitting quietly in awe of her. She smiled at me and  I quickly and quietly closed the door.

On my return to the bar, I told a member of staff, who smiled and said,

“oh that’s the owner, she’s having one of her hippy chickie meetings”

It was funny and no doubt Oscar would have entered the room and found somewhere to sit and read after all he was a guest.

And then the cream tea arrived which was wonderful.

And a very polite dog who discovered he likes fresh strawberries!

We have to return tomorrow evening to the hotel to collect my yellow jumper which I left there. It’ll be at reception.Oscar liked yellow.

Namaste and Thank You for Reading.🙏
