Thoughtfulness

©GeraldineBanksAugust2024

I realise whether I’m reading or writing, it’s the thoughts that come into my head that are stimulated by trying to find the right words or indeed understand other peoples words that definitely floats my boat.

My preference for reading is definitely older more established books, they have lasted because they touch the reader in some way. At the moment I’m reading Jack London’s, The People of The Abyss. George Orwell’s said of the book that London was misguided in many of his thoughts, for example after a night in one of London’s horrendous doss houses , he leaves his tramp associates and makes his way to his safe house for a bath, good food and a sleep in a comfortable bed.

London does though, explain the unfairness of the system that the poor and homeless are subjected to and expresses empathy with them. He was not of their class however. He is a very good writer though, as his words made me listen to him and he expressed himself in such a way that gave me much food for thought, so much so . I didn’t pay much attention to his distaste to the smells and bad habits of the tramps. Orwell was much more sympathetic and indeed humorous about this in “Down and Out in Paris and London”.

A writer, any writer has that power. Obviously it helps if you care about what you are writing about. Have you got an expansive mind? Mine isn’t very expansive. Have you seen or heard something that made you jump to a conclusion or build a premise for a story? That is how I write, something that spurs me on , that something . I don’t want to convert people as I don’t feel I can solve the World’s problems. Leave that to the academics( thankfully us writers can pull the reins in on some of the academics theories).

The writer can express the things that we know in our hearts or that puzzle us and bring them together in a format that recognises that the reader is not the only one that feels that way or if your are the only one than there is someone else, even just one person. It might make you think perhaps you should look at alternatives to your ideas or it may make you realise the world is a harsh place and you need to stick to your belief along with your creative partner who actually dared to put what you were thinking in writing.

Writing can achieve so much, but it’s the use of language that is key. With the books that I’ve read and sorry to say I have not read enough. It’s the language that makes communication with the reader possible. The reader doesn’t turn off , or put the book down never to pick it up again. That is a disaster. So the challenge with writing is to create something of interest , that peaks and intrigues and generates emotions and thoughts, that questions, and all with words.

George Orwell was a master writer and in my mind will live forever, his effect on others through his writing was immense, he was a craftsman with words and loved his writing and indeed humanity. Perhaps he did have to escape to Scotland and work on a croft. Writing at his level was draining and he was dedicated, but needed to recharge his batteries.

I don’t aim to be like George, we are after all completely different eras, but I know that we need writers to make us think and that is always going to be true. So that is why I write. To make myself and others think.

Hellish Village

No I suppose you’re not suppose to love Hellish Village, but I do. The neighbours aren’t friendly and the pubs and restaurants are closing down as no one has any money to eat out. There are a few independent shops run by people with more money than sense and there’s a Library run by volunteers.

A list the things that a good village should have would include, a good interactive social life ,a friendly atmosphere, happy people and contented children who go to school regularly.

Hellish has none of those.

Firstly, the primary school is well attended and supported by the local parents. However, once the children reach twelve or thirteen things tend to change. The good parents make a decision to move out of the area in order for the children to have a decent chance of life. Most children however stay, as not many can afford the move.

The resident children go to the secondary school , Hellish High, which a long time ago gave up trying to get any sort of “satisfactory ” report on it’s role as an education facility. It’s been in special measures a number of times and the discipline and attendance records make embarrassing reading for those who are responsible within the school. The Head of School changes at least once a year, and Hellish High holds the record for most Heads in a term , five at the last count.

This means we have quite a high rate of delinquent behaviour, as the young people argue that they have nothing to do apart from hang around “Hellish Offsales” and shoplift the reduced alcohol it sells. The young girls will sell their bodies to the local men for a bottle of vodka from the shop. Underage pregnancy is rife and the Community Police Officer hasn’t been seen on the streets for almost a decade.

I don’t own a car so I don’t worry about it being vandalised or it’s tyres being slashed just because “they can”. I don’t like it when they steal cars and then race them down the street in broad daylight , because frankly it’s very dangerous.

Best to stay indoors on days like that.

Fortunately, three of our neighbours are really good shots, so they tend to scare off any delinquents. I suppose that’s why I’m quite happy, we’ve got protection in the street we live. Strangers are spotted very quickly and if it looks like trouble well, our rough neighbours will sort them out.

Still, despite the problems we have our Mayor and Council Leaders who like to try and make out that Hellish Village is a good place to live. They certainly are good at increasing the taxes to pay for their fancy meetings and so called security. Not to mention the current MP who has been known to attend some local shindigs courtesy of the Council. There’s much talk about what goes on at those “celebrations”. Needless to say some of the village girls are involved.

Why do I love Hellish Village, well it survives that’s why I love it. Day to Day it’s hell, it has no future , and a rather dismal past, but it’s my home and in truth it’s no worse or better than a lot of places.

The End.

Hope

What positive emotion do you feel most often?

I would never push this onto people, there isn’t always hope, but I’m a pretty hopeful person.I will wiggle and wriggle to find hope and it’s worked for me so far. Not to clarify;  in a everything is resolve-able way;just in keeping looking for that little bit of light sort of way.

Are AI Girlfriends more popular than AI Boyfriends?

There must be some figures somewhere for the signing up for having an AI Friend.

Without the figures I’m going to propose that the likelihood is  that the percentage of requests for AI girlfriends far outnumbers that of AI boyfriends.

Here’s the rub, (and there will be a lot of rubs). AI generated “relationships” are for the emotionally immature. It’s a substitute for the real thing. All be it an amazingly realistic and interactive one.

Sounds like mana or womanana from heaven for the person who doesn’t want real life to interrupt their daily activities and who can switch off their chosen partner at any point they choose.

Sounds like a perfect partner for a Serial murderer or perhaps  AI partners can solve domestic violence  by supplying a non-contact outlet for whatever expression of human aggression or misunderstanding is manifested.

AI could educate the  steps to take to make progress or otherwise  in a relationship or it could be used malevolently to represent barbarity and degradation of a kind only a human being could imagine.

I began this piece because  I saw an advertisement on Tumblr for an AI girlfriend. I’m sure it will take off. What direction is unpredictable. Will it be like Aldous Huxley’s soma?

Riot

What is a word you feel that too many people use?

At the moment in the not so United Kingdom “Riot” is an overly used word.

There are Riots on the Street our Newspapers and Media Outlets  tell us with glee.

Yet life goes on, a few dustbins are thrown across the street and a 12 year old boy is arrested for “insurrection”(ten years ago the papers would have called him A S.B.O boy)

The Riots can spring up anywhere anytime and the Police must be ready with their Riot Shields to protect themselves and their employers property.

It’s a lost cause, because the Peaceful protestors have far outweighed those who were determined to flaunt authority and create disorder for whatever purpose they had in mind.

Stand easy, Authorities .Peaceful Protests are not Riots.

Compassion

What brings you peace?

What brings me Peace is when I see the World behaving with compassion. That is what underlies our progress and survival.

There are arguments and discussions at all levels and at all  times, but without compassion, they are irrelevant and misguided.

I admire Professionalism rather than a Profession.

What profession do you admire most and why?

Nowadays, Professions are a badge of honour.

Increasingly our education system has pandered to providing the qualifications to be a Professional at  a prohibitive cost to many who have the ability and talent.

A few win through and they are the Professionals.Obsessed by their chosen professional passion, they are the ones you want to look after you or your family. They excel.

The vet Noel Fitzgerald comes to mind,he epitomises someone at the top of their profession and who is constantly looking to improve outcomes.

However,by their very nature Professions can be closed shops and professional training can be a tick box exercises or worse still a statistical online algorithm driven pass fail quota.

Perhaps one day we’ll have an NVQ Level 3  in Brain Surgery .

Still a Professional with a passion for whatever field they are in are worth their weight in precious metal

The Bottle Shop

In my dusty old shop I would sell bottles, some empty and some full with the most magical and simple potions known to humanity. There would be a bottle for everyone and the supply would be endless ,so I would always have a bottle for anyone who wanted one.

Payment would be a little conversation and passing the day talking pleasantries and sharing stories of times gone by and hopes for the future.

Pauper’s Grave

I’m not a Pauper, so why do you call it a Pauper’s Grave. I did my bit for society, I played my part, when I was young I worked hard until I realised I was old and couldn’t do what I used to do. By then, I was only 45 years of age, things weren’t good, there had been wars and famine and everything was so expensive. I got sick, they said it was bad luck. When I was young I thought I made my own luck, but now I realise that luck is not what it’s about.

Was it fate I ended up alone in a hole, with earth thrown on top of me just like a discarded piece of rubbish. Did no one care what happened to my bones, that they would rot in a piece of unmarked ground. Not tended and respected like many others gone before and who will go after.

But what is the difference, I ask myself. I was not cared for in life and I am not cared for in death. I know now that it matters not and I am at rest, part of the earth and in the future part of the universe. That no one can change.
